Votes for Sale: Have you noticed that when politicians cast their votes, their decisions frequently have little or nothing to do with the actual laws being voted on, but instead their decisions are based upon what they can get in exchange for their vote? Buying and selling votes is what politics is is all about. Lobbying is literally about buying and selling votes. Campaign contributions are paid for by politicians with their votes for or against the bills the lobbyist's want passed or killed. Avoiding Condemnation: Have you also noticed that voting decision are often based upon avoiding the negative consequences of standing with one side or the other on the issue being voted upon? This is most obvious when the vote is over an emotion-filled issue such as forced motherhood (abortion), marijuana prohibition, capital punishment, healthy insurance, and regarding safety issues such as protection from terrorists? Change Is Not an Option: You've probably also noticed the strong negative reaction that politicians get when they change their position and vote for the opposite of what he (or she) has done in the past. RE: The Marijuana Middle Ground Dear Senator / Governor / Congressmen etc (Pick and use only the correct title.) We understand your moral rejection regarding the use of marijuana. You stand strongly with many of us who are of like mind. Thank you. And of course a person of your stature and position is also aware of the incredible amount of crime, death, and destruction that prohibition produces. This, unfortunately, leaves you in what seems like a no-win situation. No matter which way you vote, there is going to be a large percentage of your constituency who will either think you an idiot or that you are taking sides with the Devil. May we take the liberty of suggesting a way out of this dilemma? Suppose you were to take a position like the one expressed in the following sample of a political statement made by a politician to his constituents: Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come for me to face the dilemma over marijuana. As you well know, I cannot, in good conscience, vote for legislation that permits the use of marijuana or any other mind altering substances. On the other hand, neither can I sit by idly while laws prohibiting marijuana continue to produce incredibly devastating results. Whether we like it or not, it's time to re-examine this issue. Here's why?
Because
we have gang wars raging out of control in our city streets,
For these reasons and for several additional reasons, I can no longer vote to maintain the present prohibition policy Thus, I cannot, in good conscious, vote for either side on this issue. On several occasions, I have sat in prayer and asked God to show me a way out of the dilemma over marijuana. In response to my prayers, He has blessed me with these word: Dear ____ , your best option is to refrain from voting on either side. When a vote is called for on the marijuana issue, simply vote "I abstain." And so ladies and gentlemen, please accept my sincere apologies for not voting to support your position on the marijuana issue. And understand that I am not voting against you either. I am simply voting my conscience to the best of my ability. If you can find a more fair and more just response to this question, please send a message to my office. Thank you.

What Doesn't Work: Anybody who has ever triumphed in a confrontation know that one cannot win a battle using defensive tactics only. The women who claim to be defending reproductive rights are a classic example of the failure of using a "defense only" strategy. stone to other extremely
harmful drugs. Marijuana Prohibition makes millions of people "criminals," including at least three of our nation's Presidents - Bush, Clinton, and Obama. The indirect financial cost (police, courts, prisons, crime victims, etc.) are staggering. The annual loss of tax revenue is measured at least in the tens of billions of dollars. Probably, it's more like hundreds of billions of dollars.
